What Is Azelaic acid?
Azelaic acid is a natural saturated dicarboxylic acid, and its appearance is white to light yellow monoclinic prism, needle crystal or powder.
Azelaic acid, a compound that occurs naturally in wheat and barley, is also produced by certain fungi on the skin and is synthetically used in cosmetic formulations. It acts as an exfoliator, boosts skin cell renewal and unclogs pores, and also has mild anti-inflammatory properties.
As an acid, azelaic acid has no photosensitivity and can be used during the day. Compared with common organic acids such as salicylic acid and fruit acid, it is less irritating and milder.

Azelaic acid benefits
1. Azelaic Acid Can Help Treat Acne
By reducing the synthesis of filamentous keratin, azelaic acid reduces hyperkeratosis of hair follicles, inhibits keratinization of the epidermis, and has the effect of dredging pores. It can prevent acne formation, lighten acne marks, and inhibit post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Azelaic acid, which treats acne by speeding up skin cell turnover (keeping pores open), killing the acne-causing P. acnes bacteria, and reducing inflammation, is just as effective as Retin-A at clearing acne.
2. Azelaic Acid Aids in Whitening
Azelaic acid inhibits DNA synthesis and mitochondrial enzyme activity in overactive melanocytes (no effect on normal melanocytes). Competitive inhibition inhibits tyrosinase activity. Azelaic acid works as a tyrosinase inhibitor, which means it reduces the synthesis of melanin, the pigment in the skin.
Research shows that there is some evidence that azelaic acid formulations of 5%, 10% or 20% twice daily for six months help improve melasma discoloration, but more high-quality evidence is needed.
3. Azelaic Acid Helps Control Oil
5a-reductase is a key enzyme in the metabolism of androgen in the skin, and androgen can stimulate the sebaceous glands to secrete oil, and azelaic acid can effectively inhibit 5a-reductase, thereby improving oil secretion.
4. Azelaic Acid Can Help Treat Rosacea
Azelaic acid has anti-inflammatory properties without being overstimulating. Azelaic acid may benefit rosacea and acne-prone skin by eradicating bacteria associated with the skin condition. Other research shows that azelaic acid is better than metronidazole (a common topical rosacea treatment) in reducing redness and bumps.
