The US has no mandated upper limit for melatonin supplements, which has allowed the market to develop around whatever dose sells, and that ceiling has trended upward over time. Whether higher doses produce better outcomes for the average consumer is genuinely debated, but from a product development perspective, higher doses give brands more latitude on labeling claims in markets that allow them.
Raw material specifications: what to look for when sourcing
Supplement-grade melatonin is made synthetically. Despite what some labels suggest with phrasing like "natural melatonin," the ingredient in commercial supplements is lab-produced. The molecule is the same as what the body makes, but it's not extracted from a plant or animal source. This is completely standard and not a quality issue, but it does mean that "natural source" claims don't hold up for the raw ingredient itself. Brands can still position the overall product naturally, just not the melatonin specifically.
For raw material procurement, the key specification parameters are:
Purity. The standard for supplement-grade melatonin is ≥99% by HPLC. When you're reviewing a COA, look for the testing method and whether related impurities are listed individually. Synthesis can produce a handful of similar compounds alongside the main ingredient, so a breakdown of what else is in there tells you more than a single purity number.
Appearance and solubility. Melatonin is a white to off-white crystalline powder. It is practically insoluble in water at room temperature, which has significant implications for certain delivery formats, particularly beverages and liquid formulations where dissolution needs to be addressed through formulation design rather than assumed.
Heavy metals and microbiological testing. A proper COA should cover lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium, total plate count, yeast and mold, and pathogen screening. For EU markets, these panels aren't optional; they're the entry ticket, and regulators in several countries have been paying closer attention to supplement quality lately.
Stability data. Melatonin is sensitive to light and heat degradation. Ask suppliers for stability data under accelerated conditions, and confirm packaging recommendations; light-protective packaging is standard for reasons that extend beyond aesthetics.
Delivery formats and what changes across each
The delivery format decision interacts with raw material specification in ways that aren't always obvious at the outset.

Tablets and capsules remain the dominant category, holding around 54% of global market volume. They allow precise dosing, support controlled-release formulations, and are straightforward to manufacture. For brands where clinical credibility and dosing precision are central to the positioning, this is still the default format.
Extended-release tablets deserve a separate mention. They're more complex to manufacture but address a different consumer complaint than immediate-release: immediate-release helps with falling asleep, while extended-release targets waking during the night. The bilayer tablet format, which combines an immediate-release layer for sleep onset with an extended-release layer for sleep maintenance, is growing quickly and commands a meaningful price premium. The raw material specification is the same, but the manufacturing process requires additional formulation work.
Gummies have emerged as the category's fastest-growing format, now capturing around 38–39% of new product launches. The consumer appeal is clear: taste, convenience, and no pill-swallowing. The tricky part is dosing consistency. Gummies are harder to dose accurately than capsules or tablets, and the cooking process involves heat and acidity that can knock out some of the active ingredient if the process isn't dialed in.
