Senna Senna Alexander is an Ayurvedic herb commonly known as senna. Senna is one of the best known and most commonly used laxative ingredients in tea. Senna tea is made from the dried leaves and pods of the senna bush. The senna plant contains compounds called glycosides, called sennosides A and B, that stimulate the digestive system. It is an FDA-approved over-the-counter laxative. Because of its laxative properties, it is used to clear the bowel before diagnostic tests such as colonoscopy.

The genus Senna consists of 500 species, of which 26 species of Cassia have been reported to contain anthracene derivatives in free or glycoside form. Of these, Cassia angustifolia (Indian senna) and Cassia (Alexandrian senna) are official in different pharmacopoeia because of their laxative activity and because they can be used in large quantities.

The maximum daily dose for the treatment of constipation is 15 to 30 mg of sennoside. However, the correct individual dose is the minimum dose required to produce comfortable soft motion. The dose of senna is about 500 mg to 2 grams of leaf or pod powder.

Senna leaf eact comes from the senna plant. It's an herb that belongs to a group of flowering plants native to tropical regions. The most commonly used variety of senna as a medicinal eact or tea is the Cassia senna, also called wild senna. You can find it in many parts of the world, including North America, along the moist banks of streams and rivers and densely wooded areas. Although the variety of senna widely used is the Cassia senna, try not to confuse it with cassia, another name for a cinnamon bark species.
