Many clients, when inquiring for the first time, directly ask, "Do you have astaxanthin?" When we ask in return, "Which specification do you need?" they sometimes hesitate.
This is not surprising. For brands just starting to develop astaxanthin products, numbers like 2%, 5%, and 10% may seem like just differences in concentration, but they actually involve the overall logic of formulation design, cost structure, and stability management. Choosing the wrong specification can lead to inflated costs, or even worse, the active ingredients not lasting past their shelf life after the product is put on the market.
We have been working in the plant extracts and functional raw materials industry in Xi'an for nearly twenty years, and astaxanthin has consistently been one of the most consistently inquired-about categories. This article aims to clarify the judgment experience we have accumulated in this process, providing a reference for purchasing and formulators who are currently selecting raw materials.
First, clarify what "X%" actually means. The 2%, 5%, and 10% astaxanthin figures mentioned in the market refer to the percentage of astaxanthin in the extract powder. It's typically derived from Haematococcus pluvialis and exists in either free or esterified form.
A point of confusion: Natural astaxanthin in Haematococcus pluvialis is primarily in esterified form (approximately 95% or more). Some reports state the total esterified content, while others convert it to free form. The difference between these two calculations can be around 30%. Therefore, when receiving a Certificate of Assessment (COA), the first thing to do is confirm the testing method-two reports stating "5%" may have vastly different actual effective contents.
Three Specifications Three Uses
The 2% specification is the most widely sold in the market. The reason is simple: relatively low price, relatively easy to handle stability, suitable for products with low addition requirements or strict cost control.
Common scenarios for astaxanthin include pet supplements, basic antioxidant compound products, or as a "bonus" rather than a core ingredient in a larger formula. If your product doesn't emphasize astaxanthin but simply uses its antioxidant properties, 2% is usually sufficient.
The addition amount is approximately 1–3 grams per kilogram (based on the final product), making it easier to control the raw material cost per capsule.
The 5% dosage is our most frequently shipped and most commonly used by functional supplement brands.
The reason is that it strikes a good balance between formulation flexibility and cost-it allows for achieving the claimed astaxanthin activity level per capsule or daily dose (typically 4–12 mg) without making the raw material cost too high a percentage of the formula. More importantly, the 5% dosage has the most proven powder flowability and compatibility with other ingredients, resulting in the lowest probability of problems.
If your product focuses on antioxidants, sports recovery, and eye health, and you plan to sell it in the US, Europe, or Japan, 5% is usually the safest starting point.
The 10% concentration is increasingly attracting attention from brands seeking high purity, especially those emphasizing "clean label" or high-end products-achieving higher activity with less dosage by reducing the overall volume of capsules or powder packets.
However, the problem with 10% is the exponentially increased difficulty in achieving stability. Astaxanthin is extremely sensitive to light, oxygen, and heat; the higher the concentration, the more stringent the requirements for the production environment, packaging system, and storage conditions. We once conducted a stability comparison for a client on the same batch, and under the same packaging conditions, the 10% concentration had a retention rate nearly 8 percentage points lower than the 5% concentration after 12 months.
This isn't to say that 10% is bad, but rather that choosing 10% requires a corresponding solution: light-blocking packaging, nitrogen-filled packaging, low-temperature logistics, or using products with microencapsulation technology. Otherwise, the advantages of higher concentration will be offset by degradation losses.
An easily overlooked variable: carrier and dosage form
Even with the same 5% astaxanthin, the application scenarios for oil-dispersed and powder forms are actually quite different.
Oil-dispersed carriers (usually based on olive oil or sunflower seed oil) are suitable for soft capsule filling due to their good lipid solubility and high bioavailability, but are not suitable for direct tablet or powder packaging. Powder carriers can be used for hard capsule filling, tableting, and solid beverages, but the heat and friction during processing cause greater loss of activity.
When purchasing, clarifying "what is the carrier?" is more important than simply asking "what percentage is it?"
How to discuss specifications with suppliers
Experienced buyers will consider the following questions as standard practice:
1. What is the testing method? What form (free/esterified) does the HPLC peak position correspond to?
2. Is stability data available? How many months has it been produced? Under what conditions was it measured?
3. What is the content fluctuation range between production batches? ±5% or ±10%?
4. Is there a microencapsulated version? Has the stability data been validated separately?

Asking these questions can basically quickly determine whether the supplier has genuine production experience or is simply a trading company reselling.

Before choosing a specification, think about this
We have a framework we frequently use internally, which we'd also like to share with purchasing for reference:
What is the product's primary sales scenario? -High-end independent brand or mass retail? The former has stricter requirements for specification and purity, while the latter is more cost-sensitive.
Is astaxanthin the main ingredient or a supporting ingredient in the formulation? -If it's the main ingredient, it must be at least 5%; for supporting ingredients, consider a 2% blend.
Are there any regulatory limits on the amount added in the target market? -The EU has a recommended daily intake limit for astaxanthin, which directly affects how many mg you can list on the product label, and consequently, what specification of raw material you need.
Once you understand these three questions, choosing the specification will be much easier.
