What do liposomes bring to cosmetics?

What are liposomes?

Liposome is a spherical carrier with a phospholipid bilayer structure, generally composed of phospholipids and cholesterol. The hydrophilic part of the phospholipid molecule is dispersed in the water phase, and the hydrophobic part aggregates with each other to form a closed vesicle structure with a bilayer. Water-soluble substances can be wrapped in the internal water phase of phospholipids, and fat-soluble substances can be wrapped in phospholipid bilayers.

Characteristics of liposomes

● Cover up bad smell and color
When the active ingredient has a unique smell or color, after liposome encapsulation, it can cover up the bad smell and color of the active ingredient to a certain extent.
● Improve the stability of active ingredients
If the active ingredient has unstable characteristics such as easy oxidation and easy decomposition when exposed to light, after being encapsulated by liposomes, the active ingredient can be isolated from contact with light and oxygen, and the stability can be improved.
● Improve solubility
Liposomes have a phospholipid bilayer structure that can encapsulate substances of different polarities.
● Promote penetration
Liposomes can penetrate the dense stratum corneum through a variety of penetration mechanisms, deliver active ingredients into the skin, and improve bioavailability.

At the same time, liposomes also have the characteristics of high safety, low irritation, and high dispersion of incompatible components, providing multi-faceted assistance for the maximum effect of active ingredients.

Liposome Penetration Mechanism

Human skin is composed of epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous tissue, the outermost layer of which is the stratum corneum. A complete stratum corneum can isolate most of the exogenous substances, which is also the main reason for hindering the penetration and absorption of active ingredients. Liposomes can penetrate the stratum corneum and enter the skin through a variety of penetration methods.
● Hydration
Through hydration, liposomes change the intercellular structure of keratinocytes, from a tight and orderly arrangement to a loose and porous state, allowing the active ingredients to enter the skin smoothly.
● Fusion Mechanism
Liposome lipids interact with skin lipids, altering the lipid structure of the stratum corneum and reducing its barrier function.
● Penetration mechanism
The improved new liposome has certain fluidity and deformability, and can pass through the stratum corneum through the intercellular space.
● Skin Appendages
Skin appendages, such as hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands, are numerous and widely distributed in the deep layer of human skin. Active ingredients can enter the skin through tiny openings in hair follicles, sweat glands, and sebaceous glands.
