● Used as a unique antioxidant
Ergothione is a highly protective, non-toxic natural antioxidant for cells. It is not easily oxidized in water, which allows the concentration of ergothione in some tissues to reach mmol and activates the cells' natural antioxidant defense system. Among the many antioxidants, ergothione is particularly unique because it can chelate heavy metal ions, which can protect the body's red blood cells from free radical damage.
● For organ transplantation
The existing tissue storage and preservation time play a decisive role in the success of organ transplantation surgery. The most commonly used antioxidant for organ preservation is glutathione. When exposed to the environment, glutathione is easily oxidized. Even in cold storage or liquid environments, its antioxidant capacity is greatly decreased, causing cytotoxicity and inflammation, inducing histone hydrolysis. Because ergothione is stable in aqueous solution and can chelate heavy metal ions as an antioxidant, it can be used as a substitute for glutathione in the field of organ protection, so as to achieve better protection of transplanted organs.
