Inositol, also known as cyclohexanehexol and vitamin B8 (but it is not a vitamin in essence), is a growth factor for animals and microorganisms and is widely distributed in animals and plants. Inositol was first isolated from myocardium and liver. It tastes sweet, is soluble in water and acetic acid, has no optical activity, and can also be extracted from corn soaking liquid.
It is mainly used to treat cirrhosis, hepatitis, fatty liver, and high cholesterol in the blood. Inositol is a glucose isomer with a molecular formula of C₆H₁₂O₆.

Inositol has 9 isomers in theory. The most important active forms are myo-inositol (MI) and D-chiro-inositol (DCI). DCI can be converted from MI under the action of insulin-dependent isomerase. The two exist in a specific ratio in different tissue cells to play biological functions.
