What is apigenin?

Apigenin, also known as apigenin and apigenin, is a natural flavonoid compound derived from the leaves of Apium graveolens L.var.dulce DC., mainly found in Daphneaceae, Verbenaceae, Among the Selaginaceae plants, they are widely distributed in vegetables and fruits in warm tropical regions, and are also distributed in some plant-derived beverages, such as tea, wine and some condiments.

What are the effects of apigenin?

Apigenin offers a range of health benefits, from supporting heart and brain health to promoting healthier skin. Most studies involving flavonoids use animal models, but they highlight the underlying mechanisms and benefits of this phytonutrient.
1. As an antioxidant
Flavonoids are widely known for their antioxidant properties, and many studies have shown that apigenin in particular has significant antioxidant effects. It is also a potent anti-inflammatory agent compared to other flavonoids.
Due to their antioxidant effects, flavonoids have been used to promote healthy aging and are used to promote skin health. Topical apigenin is even used to fight acne and promote skin cell growth.
2. Has antibacterial effect
Reports suggest that apigenin has "reversal antibiotic" activity against certain bacteria, meaning it may be active against antibiotic-resistant bacteria and help reverse bacterial resistance. The researchers believe that phytonutrients could be used as a new class of antibiotics or as dietary supplements to enhance the performance of antibiotics.
The nutrient has also been shown to inhibit several viruses, including herpes virus; hepatitis C; influenza; hand, foot and mouth disease; and African swine fever.
3. Reduce Pain
Due to its anti-inflammatory effects, apigenin is able to reduce pain and discomfort associated with inflammatory issues. This includes pain from digestive issues, infections, immune reactions, and migraines.
Flavonoids have been shown to reduce the release of cytokines, which can be overproduced and lead to disease.
4. Supports Heart Health
Apigenin supports cardiovascular health by reducing blood pressure and inflammation. Animal models have shown that it is cardioprotective in rats with heart damage.
An animal study found that apigenin protected rats from heart attacks by reducing edema, cell death, and oxidative stress.
5. Enhances brain function
Apigenin has neuroprotective effects.
Research published in Neuroregeneration Research found that apigenin has cognitive-enhancing effects due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In mice with Alzheimer's disease, it improved memory and learning deficits, while in humans it suppressed inflammatory mediators.
6. Relieves Anxiety and Depression
This flavonoid is known for its relaxing and calming effects. It has been shown to lower cortisol levels, helping to prevent the body's response to chronic stress.
This explains why chamomile tea can have beneficial effects on anxiety and aid in relaxation and sleep.
Apigenin has also been shown to improve depression in rodents. Flavonoid treatment was able to prolong immobility time in mice induced by chronic corticosterone treatment.
7. Fight diabetes
Animal studies have shown that apigenin can improve insulin resistance, which can be helpful for people with diabetes. One report found that flavonoids improved impaired glucose tolerance and significantly reduced insulin resistance.
8. As an anticancer agent
Several experimental and biological studies have shown that apigenin acts as an anticancer agent. A report published in Phytotherapy Research found that flavonoids exhibit cell growth arrest and apoptosis in many types of tumors, including lung, liver, colon, prostate, pancreas, breast, skin, blood and cervical .
Anticancer research has further explored how apigenin functions in several cancer signaling pathways, and due to its low toxicity and effects on normal versus cancer cells, it should be of interest as a possible modality of chemotherapy.
9. May Increase Testosterone
Laboratory studies have shown that apigenin plays a role in testosterone synthesis and blocks the signaling of the testosterone-arrestin protein.
The use of apigenin for bodybuilding has become increasingly popular due to its potential effects on hormone levels. In this case, apigenin supplements are used to increase testosterone and possibly block estrogen production.
This may help with muscle growth, strength and energy levels.

What are the applications of apigenin?

At present, apigenin has been widely used in the market:

01. As a raw material for health products

Mainly capsules and tablets. It is often compounded with various healthy raw materials such as vitamin B1, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin C, theanine, quercetin, and GABA.

02. As a raw material for cosmetics

High-concentration apigenin can inhibit the activity of melanocytes, and can be added to sunscreen, face cream, essence, lotion, mask and other cosmetics; it can be used in shampoo and conditioner.

03. As feed raw material

Anti-plague, improve animal immunity.
