What is 5-HTP?
5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a chemical produced by the body from tryptophan, an essential amino acid obtained from food. After tryptophan is converted to 5-HTP, the chemical turns into another chemical called serotonin, a neurotransmitter that carries signals between brain cells.
NutriDyn's 5-HTP is a natural supplement that supports healthy mood and well-being. The main ingredient, 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), is extracted from the Griffonia simplicifolia seed.
5-HTP is the main metabolite of the amino acid L-tryptophan, and since serotonin readily crosses the blood-brain barrier, it is effective at increasing serotonin levels in the brain.
How does 5-HTP work?
5-HTP belongs to a class of chemicals known as "nootropics." These chemicals alter brain chemistry to produce desirable psychological and/or physical effects (such as improved mood and increased well-being).
Chemically, serotonin crosses the blood-brain barrier and is converted to serotonin, which promotes calm and relaxation. By raising serotonin levels in the brain, serotonin can help improve mood, relaxation, nervous tissue, and sleep quality.
Additionally, there is some data to suggest that supplementation with 5-hydroxytryptophan may lead to weight loss by reducing food intake. Research suggests that increased serotonin levels may help individuals eat less food, which can affect body weight.
What are the functions of 5-HTP?
Depressed
Preliminary research suggests that 5-HTP may work like some antidepressant drugs in treating people with mild to moderate depression. Like antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), including fluoxetine (Prozac) and sertraline (Zoloft), 5-HTP increases serotonin levels in the brain. One study compared the effects of 5-HTP and fluvoxamine (Luvox) in 63 people and found that those who took 5-HTP did as well as those who took Luvox. They also had fewer side effects than the Luvox group. However, these studies were too small to determine whether 5-HTP was effective. More research is needed.

Fibromyalgia
Research shows that 5-HTP can improve symptoms of fibromyalgia, including pain, anxiety, morning stiffness, and fatigue. Many people with fibromyalgia have low levels of serotonin, and doctors often prescribe antidepressants. Like antidepressants, 5-HTP increases serotonin levels in the brain. However, it doesn't work for everyone with fibromyalgia. More research is needed to understand its effects.

Insomnia
In one study, people who took 5-HTP fell asleep faster and slept more deeply than those who took a placebo. Researchers recommend taking 200 to 400 mg at night to stimulate serotonin production, but it may take 6 to 12 weeks for the full effect to occur.
Migraines and other headaches
Antidepressants are sometimes prescribed to treat migraines. Research suggests that high doses of 5-HTP may help treat various types of headaches, including migraines. However, the evidence is mixed, with other studies showing no effect.
Obesity
A few small studies have investigated whether 5-HTP can help people lose weight. In one study, people who took 5-HTP ate fewer calories than those who took a placebo, even though they weren't trying to diet. Researchers believe that 5-HTP makes people feel fuller after eating, so they eat less.
