What is L-Carnosine?

Carnosine (L-Carnosine), scientific name β-alanyl-L-histidine, is a dipeptide composed of β-alanine and L-histidine, a crystalline solid. Muscle and brain tissue contain very high concentrations of carnosine. Carnosine is a compound discovered together with carnitine by Russian chemist Gurevich. Studies in the UK, South Korea, Russia and other countries have shown that carnosine has a strong antioxidant capacity and is beneficial to the human body. Carnosine has been shown to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) and α-β-unsaturated aldehydes formed during oxidative stress by excessive oxidation of fatty acids in cell membranes.

The role of carnosine

1. International studies have confirmed that carnosine has a good anti-glycation effect. Carbonylated proteins and glycated end products (AGEs) are signals of cellular senescence. They accumulate abnormally inside cells and accelerate cross-linking with other proteins. Carnosine can replace the protein in the body to react with sugar by reacting with sugar before the sugar erodes the skin, thereby helping to protect the protein from being glycosylated and achieving the effect of anti-glycation.
2. There is an aging-related phenomenon called non-enzymatic glycosylation of proteins.
