Hmb is the active metabolite of the branched-chain amino acid leucine, which is essential for the human body. It can promote protein synthesis and reduce its decomposition, thereby increasing human body strength, delaying muscle fatigue, and helping to prevent muscle atrophy in the elderly. The concentration of HMB in human plasma is 1~4Lmol/L, the concentration can increase 5~10 times after eating, and the half-life is about 2~4 hours, but whether it is injected or additionally ingested, about 30% of HMB will be absorbed by muscles. Therefore, HMB is also used as a new nutritional supplement to increase strength and increase muscle mass.

There are two main energy sources claimed by HMB, one is to inhibit protein breakdown and reduce muscle loss. Another is to promote protein synthesis. When HMB was just introduced into the sports world, there were actually very few related human experimental studies. There were only three experiments to prove that HMB has the effect of promoting and anti-decomposition, and these three experiments were all from the same laboratory (Nissen. 1996). The methods used in these experiments were later criticized, but the reports of the experiments are still widely cited today.

1. HMB may promote recovery by reducing exercise-induced skeletal muscle injury in both exercise and non-exercise populations.

However, research on HMB-FA is still in its infancy, and there is not enough research to support whether one form is superior.
6. Studies have confirmed that HMB can improve LBM and function in elderly and sedentary people.
7. HMB plus planned exercise may contribute to fat mass (FM) reduction.
8. HMB helps to inhibit protein breakdown and promote protein synthesis.
9. Long-term use of HMB is safe for both young and old.
