Since AKG is not found in normal food, the scientists supplemented the mice daily by adding CaAKG (the calcium salt form of AKG) starting when they were 18 months old (equivalent to human beings in their 50s) until the mice died.
Female mice achieved significant longevity, with an average of 12% longer lifespan. Moreover, compared with their peers without AKG supplementation, the female aged mice receiving AKG appeared "younger", their fur was significantly improved in both color and gloss, and even had a reversal of "white hair to black hair".
In male mice, although no increase in lifespan was seen, they maintained a longer period of health. They were able to maintain muscle better than their control counterparts when supplemented with AKG on multiple measures. And, like the female group, they had a more robust gait and were less prone to hunchback. The incidence of some diseases that often occur in aging, such as tumors and visual impairment, has also been reduced.
