What is salicylic acid?
Salicylic acid (chemical name: o-hydroxybenzoic acid) is a beta hydroxy acid extracted from the bark of saliculus, willow, etc., referred to as BHA.Salicylic acid is a kind of fat soluble organic acid. It is a white crystalline powder found naturally in willow bark, white pearl leaves and sweet birch trees. It is an important fine chemical raw material and can be used as medicine, spices, dyes, pesticides, rubber additives and other important raw materials of fine chemicals.
Salicylic Acid Effects and Benefits
● Accelerate skin metabolism
The main function of the stratum corneum of the skin is to protect the cells of each layer of the skin. Layer after layer of epidermal cell metabolism will naturally move outward. After the outermost stratum corneum gradually ages and becomes hard, it will naturally flake off under normal circumstances. Old keratin that does not fall off normally will make the skin appear rough and dull, slow down the skin metabolism rate, and even form acne to block pores. Salicylic acid can remove excess stratum corneum and promote the rapid renewal of epidermal cells; if the epidermal cells are fresh and young cells full of vitality, it will naturally restore smooth and delicate skin.
● Clean pores
Salicylic acid is fat-soluble, and can penetrate into the deep layer of pores along the sebaceous glands that secrete oil, which is beneficial to dissolve the old accumulated cuticles in pores and improve the situation of blocked pores, so it can block the formation of acne and shrink enlarged pores pores.
● Acne prevention
Salicylic acid acts on the hair follicle wall cells, which can help remove blocked hair follicles and correct abnormal cell shedding. It can prevent pore blockage for minor acne and is most effective for blackheads. It can reduce the abnormal shedding of hair follicle walls to prevent the generation of new lesions, but it has no effect on reducing sebum secretion and eradicating acne bacteria.
How does salicylic acid work?
Salicylic Acid reaches deep into the skin and cleanses pores. As an acidic exfoliant, salicylic acid works by softening and dissolving keratin. Keratin is a protein found in our skin that is simply the glue that keeps cells together. So, the acid makes it easier to exfoliate those dead skin cells.

Salicylic acid is an oil-soluble acid. Unlike AHA, it can penetrate deep into the pores. When it lands inside the pores, it can loosen the clogged pores and allow the excess oil to flow out.
