Description
What Is nicotinic acid?
Niacin, or vitamin B3, is a water-soluble B vitamin that occurs naturally in some foods, is added to foods, and is sold as a supplement. The two most common forms of niacin found in foods and supplements are niacin and niacinamide. The human body can also convert tryptophan to niacinamide. Niacin is water soluble, so excess niacin that the body does not need is excreted in the urine. Niacin acts as a coenzyme in the body, and more than 400 enzymes rely on it for various reactions. Niacin helps convert nutrients into energy, make cholesterol and fats, make and repair DNA, and act as an antioxidant.
Specification Sheet

Nicotinic Acid Benefits
1. Improve blood lipid levels
Niacin may help improve your blood lipids in several ways:
Increase HDL cholesterol
Lower LDL
lower triglyceride levels
These mean reduced risk of heart disease.
It also requires high doses of niacin (usually 1,500 mg or more) to improve blood lipid levels, which can increase the risk of unpleasant or potentially harmful side effects.
For these reasons, niacin is not a primary treatment for high cholesterol. It is mainly used to help improve blood lipid levels in people who cannot tolerate statins.

2. May Lower Blood Pressure
One of the effects of niacin is to release prostaglandins, or chemicals that help blood vessels dilate, improve blood flow and lower blood pressure. Therefore, niacin may play a role in preventing or treating high blood pressure.

3. May Help Treat Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which your body attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Research suggests that niacin can help protect these cells and may even reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, a disease that these children are more likely to develop.
For people with type 2 diabetes, however, the effects of niacin are more complex.
For one thing, it can help lower the high cholesterol levels that are common in people with type 2 diabetes. On the other hand, it has the potential to increase blood sugar levels. Therefore, people with diabetes who take niacin for high cholesterol also need to monitor their blood sugar carefully.
4. Boosts Brain Function
Your brain needs niacin, as part of the coenzymes NAD and NADP, for energy and to function properly. It turns out that both brain fog and psychiatric symptoms are linked to niacin deficiency. Certain types of schizophrenia can be treated with niacin because it helps undo brain cell damage caused by niacin deficiency.
5. Improves Skin Health
Niacin helps protect skin cells from sun damage, whether taken orally or as a lotion.
It may also help prevent certain types of skin cancer. Studies have found that taking 500 mg of niacinamide twice daily reduces the incidence of non-melanoma skin cancer.
